Once it Stood by Diane Hein
Greedy developers took this hotel's power
And its landmark title
And smashed it to the ground.
Gone are its walls
Its grace, its charm, its people.
And in its place condos
For the wealthy
Will be built.
The love of money won.
How can we save our landmarks
In the war betweeen
Developers, politicians, lawyers
And people who care?
(Demolition photo below)
NOTE: Rory Hiller, Clearwater, is one of the developers who
contributed to tearing down our
beautiful landmark Clearwater Beach Hotel. He wants
to buy the Belleview Biltmore Hotel
and put condo/hotel units in the north and south wings which this
web site is
against! (Scroll down for another photo. Either one
available in an 8 by 10 inch.)
The Clearwater Beach Hotel: "It was built as a summer
bungalow in 1917. Famous guests included
John Travolta, K.D. Lang and Julie Eisenhower. Rock band Jethro
Tull, too. With 137 rooms,
it was renovated several times, most recently in 1988. It was considered
a local treasure.
In April 2004, developer Mike Cheezem said he would tear the place
down."
