Splendid China  (located in Orlando, Florida)

    By Diane Hein
      November 5, 2003

Acres and acres of Chinese history
Spread gloriously in miniature
Pagodas,
Temples
The Great Wall
Buddhas
Warriors
Thousands of years compacted
In my three hour trip
Where could I ever find such artistic detail
Except in Splendid China.

Can A Man be Trained?

By Diane Hein
September 25, 2003

Can a man be trained?
Women often ask.
For men to put the toilet seat down
Without a smirk or frown!
To completely cap the toothpaste
When they're off to work in haste.
Oh centuries have now gone by
To change a man, women still will try!

My Little Clown Flower Garden

By Diane Hein
September 25, 2003

I have a little garden by my door
Tending to it is hardly a chore.

But instead wonderment from it I derive
Watching it grow makes me feel so alive.

The rich, dark potting soil I love to feel
While I plant delightful flowers and kneel.

Even the fresh, pungent mulch smells so good
The fragrance beings me back to my childhood.

Yes my new hobby brings me much pleasure
It makes my heart happy, such a great lure!

Our Assembly

    By Diane Hein
      June 27, 2003

We must pick up the pieces
Of life's many challenges
Things that went wrong
Or people who let us down
Bending over often
Gathering debris thrown on our ground.
Reasoning away the little hurts
Dealing with the big ones
Forgiving often.
Then assembling all the parts
Into one solid, strong, loving self.

Great Expectations

    By Diane Hein
    June 20, 2003

We expect the sun to rise
And expect the stars to shine.
Knowledge taught by others after our birth.
But one sad lesson we taught ourselves
Expecting others to be just like us.

On Breaking Habits

    By Diane Hein
    June 20, 2003

It's never too late to change
Habits can be broken
Fall asleep with your goals
And vision yourself shiny and new.
Then wake up every morn
And carve a new reality.

Haiku   17 syllables or less in 3 to 4 lines

    By Diane Hein
    June 20, 2003

Wiggle your words
Your listener needs
Your speech to fit just them.
---------------------------------------------
The clock head turns
Rotating all its minutes
Into one hour.
-----------------------------------------
Pre-washed jeans
A fashion statement
Written for profit.
------------------------------------------
Birds flying
Wind pockets created
In God's shirt.
-----------------------------------------
Happiness comes to my door
I welcome
This best seller.
------------------------------------------
Blue skies step out
Sunset steps in
Dusk is a beautiful dance.
--------------------------------------
Live well with your shadows
They will make your light
Stand out.
-------------------------------------------
There's no need to rush
Know your lover well
Before you fall in love.
---------------------------------------
It was their era
A time together
A time now to go.
--------------------------------
Snap went their rubber band
They stretched it
As far as they could go.
-------------------------------------
They spoke volumes together
There is a time
When all has been said.
--------------------------------------
A spoon, a fork, a knife
At dinnertime
A three-way conversation.
---------------------------------------
A butterfly takes wing
Fresh flowers
Are always uplifting.
-------------------------------------
Love whispers and is soft
It never shouts
Until it is over with.
-------------------------------------------
Hurriedly runs the cat
Time runs out
Even when you have nine lives.
------------------------------------------
Sitting on a bench
I watch birds fly by
And my time.
------------------------------------------
The sun shines
Warming earth
Warming my heart.
---------------------------------------------
Love like flowers
Can bloom for a lifetime
Or just one season.
-----------------------------------------------
I live in two homes,
My body and my mind
Both need upkeep.
-------------------------------------------
Diamonds sparkle
Rubies glow
Forgiveness radiates.

The Best Present to Yourself

By Diane Hein

Give to yourself a little present...
Take the time to love yourself each day.
Forgive all the mistakes you made,
Be most proud of who you are
And rebuild yourself back up.
Show some kindness to your soul
God gave you many good gifts
So celebrate who you are!

An Afternoon Pause

By Diane Hein

It's the slow nudge of the afternoon
That makes me stop.
Hot tea awaits me
To speed up the hour's pulse.
But between slow sips
I have fragmented daydreams
Where I face my challenges
And achieve my goals.

Our Hourglass Minds

    By Diane Hein
    November 20, 2003

The fullness of a thought
Plump with its meanings
From our hourglass minds.
When the sands of our past
Trickle into the present
And give definition of who we are.

Landscaping

    By Diane Hein
    November 20, 2003

I strive
To make the best of each hour.
Landscaped minutes
Not only have beauty
But order and harmony.
Success is built on this.

Going with the Flow with the Unexpected

By Diane Hein

Grief comes in waves like the rolling blue sea
A morning tide that washes over me.

But as the water recedes and flows back
I steady myself for the next attack.

I'll learn to flow with life's big and small blows
To stay on top avoiding undertows.

Home Bound

By Diane Hein

Home is where the music lies
Its divine refrain comforts me.

When life presents a discord
Home is where the sweet song plays.

A silver bell waits for me
In my chapel at day's end.

The lovely sound comforts me
Home is where harmony plays.

A Northern Spring

By Diane Hein

A northern spring is born piecemeal...
Bits of green poke above the brown
Dew-filled air ghosts the early morn
Trees dappled with leafy buds
Daffodils want to rise and smile
Bushes freed from the hostage cold
Hearts warmed by April's wondrous joy.

A Mother's Joy

By Diane Hein

All dressed up in pink
A baby in her Sunday best.
Mom is on a stroll.
Bursting in pride
Beaming in joy
Bottomless in love.

New Beginnings

By Diane Hein

It's time to move on.
Yesterday's hallways I shall leave
I hear their music.
New rhythms bounce in me
As they pull me forward.
My eyes have dried
And the rains have helped me bloom
I'm growing in a new garden of dreams.

My Journey

By Diane Hein

I chase the comet
It's still out there.
Light years away perhaps
But like the journey of the Magic
If I travel all night
I'll reach the tail and hold on tight.
Then I'll climb all the stars
Where dreams do come true.

One Aspiration!

By Diane Hein

Oh I aspire to be a great listener
To hear all you say
Walk in your shoes
And understand your way.

To pay attention while you speak
And concentrate on your words
Then absorb their mystique
That is my wish today.

The Eternal Flower

By Diane Hein

The annual flowers
Like zinnias and pansies
Grow, bloom and charm.
Loveliness for the summer
Once a year
And then they are gone.
But plant and nurture
Forgiveness
And this perennial flower
Will beautify forever.

To Our Brave Military

By Diane Hein

To see our soldiers fight
Who must be strong
Come back safely
You make us so proud!
To fight all hours
To assure our freedom
Come back safely
You make us so proud.

Decision-Making Time

By Diane Hein

A new second
A new hour
A new day.
Time to go forward
And search the seas
And roam new avenues.
Live in the present while
Still walking towards the future.
To grow on a winding vine
And keep stretching for the sun.
To always look ahead
While making the decision
To be happy in the moment.

Losses

By Diane Hein

There are losses we say we cannot bear
To lose them we know our hearts would then tear.

The things and people we cannot give up
Because we know that they so fill our cup.

Yet time might pass when they or we must go
Our treasures are gone and we bear the low.

For life has its cycles of discontent
But let's use our inner strength God has sent.

Healthy Intuition

By Diane Hein

The body knows best
It is wise beyond its years
Listen to its rhythm
And be attuned to its aches.
For when it cries
There is a wintry dance
That needs a summer solace
Of peace and much needed rest.

My Wish

By Diane Hein

Words that are light like air
Dancing in space with waltzing feet
Floating with cheer to my friends
Full of joy, love and hope.
May they tickle their soul
That is what I wish for today!

Until Time's End

By Diane Hein

Nourishment scarce on the branches
The leaves are frantic in the trees
Summer's end is here.
Fall's spectrum wants in

Clinging like mortals, waiting for hope
That they shall live longer
That they shall see just one more day
The way I'll always want to be.

The Magic of Two Words

By Diane Hein

Appreciation like a fast chariot
Rides on air
Reaching vaulted destinations
To those who have toiled
Just for us.
So remember
A well-placed "thank you"
Brings a golden garland
And light on shady days
To all you know.

My Voice

By Diane Hein

Come find me for I am here
Among the Florida skies.
In the wind there is my voice
It speaks of many things:
The seasons of the year
The world today
Its laughter, its tears
And of you and me,
But most importantly
The hope of tomorrow's tapestry.

A Sunny Christmas Eve in the City

By Diane Hein

It was sunny in the city
Smiling windows glistened with glee.

The nine to five crowd walked in stride
But with an extra light glide.

Shoppers stuffed with their Christmas cash
To make a final shopping dash!

Hints of Hope

By Diane Hein

Hope strolled in today
It's soft and quiet
Yet its whisper I still hear.
I'll take its hand
And be a good friend.
Together with the passing hours
We'll sing not just one song
But a chorus to last the whole day long!

Seeking The Perfect White Pearl

By Diane Hein

We seek this white natural beauty
Shiny and smooth.
Flawless we want it to be.
Man's search for perfection
Works great for pearls
But not people.
To accept human flaws
Is a much bigger challenge
A priceless pearl worth cultivating!

God's Love

By Diane Hein

God's love is always ever true
From sunrise to next morning dew.

He gives us the great gift of life
To treasure even through all strife.

Our purpose is to spread His love
And let it have the wings of a dove.

Winter Wonders

By Diane Hein

The cool winter breeze smiles in
Sparkling, crisp and pure,
Like a gold chain
Its 24-karat brilliance circles me.
My autumn eyes melt away
The air very crystal clear
I see the world so differently!
The magic of this season
It has no bounds,
Invigorated now
I feel courageous
Able to conquer all!

The Changing World

By Diane Hein

The world has changed
Love seems less and less
Thankfulness appears a lost art
Religion often an afterthought
But if we stick to our ideals
The earth will keep spinning
And good will overcome evil.

The Bounce of a Child

By Diane Hein

A child's rhythm has no end
So where does it begin?
Love and laughter in their hearts
And big smiles from their birth.
The magic of youthful joy.

The Anti-Aging Pill

By Diane Hein

A youthful heart is merry
A middle-aged heart is never idle
An aging heart which loves
Stays forever young.

Elderly Concerns

By Diane Hein

It's Senior Citizen Monday
Four men, two women,
A round table discussion
Over their coffee
Discussing not Iraq
Or 9/11.
But of Vitamin E and Prilosec
Longevity and well being
Override worldly concerns.

Ideas

By Diane Hein

I have an idea
Let me lay it out across the sun
Where light will keep it warm.
And when I'm ready
I shall plant its seed in my yard
And nurture it with praise.
Then a full garden will grow
And I shall reap a full bouquet.

What is a Red Rose?

    By Diane Hein
    November 7, 2003

Beauty is this flower's gracious charm
From a garden, florist or a farm.

Soft petals that open wide
Hints of fragrance even at nightside.

Love's strong symbol on Valentine's Day
Often in an exquisite bouquet.

Yes the red rose has so much power
Elegant magic each passing hour!

The Woman I Am

    By Diane Hein
    November 7, 2003

The woman I am
   knows no bounds
Challenges not problems
   in life's fairgrounds.

She goes her way
  which drives belief
That persistence is key
  in any cloverleaf.

The woman I am
  has a big dream
That she will win
  even swimming upstream.

The Dream to Achieve

    By Diane Hein
    November 7, 2003

The dream to achieve
Is it a gene or self taught?
Does the baby inherently walk
Or rise to mimic his or her parents?

To finish school
To explore the unknown
To find health
To build a career
To explore the unknown
To meet our mate
To find happiness
To achieve peace

Lofty dreams have we
Some are caught in a moment's wind
Others year to excavate
But keep your spirit alive
And above all
Thirst to win.

Dreamlets

    By Diane Hein
    November 7, 2003

Those morning hours when on my pillow my head still lays
When I drift in and out of light sleep and my mind plays.

Not awake yet awake my body frozen in time
Images dance to and fro as I snooze in their rhyme.

Do I get up and then go to work or should I stay
For one more short round in my little dreamlet buffet!

Wisdom

    By Diane Hein
    November 7, 2003

The wise cat
Sits and watches
Eyeing his prey
Knows the right moment
When to run and leap.

The wise pupil
Studies his subject
Learns it wells
Knows the right moment
When to use it.

It's the Small Things

    By Diane Hein
    November 7, 2003

It's the small things that make a day go well

A child's smile
A husband's kiss
A wife's thank you
A friend's call
A mother's blessing
A father's approval.

Humble are these moments
But grand on scale to you and me.

A Wonderful Perfume

    By Diane Hein
    November 7, 2003

A gentle sprinkle of compliments
Misted through the air
The fragrance lifts hearts
With beads of cheer and joy.
So let's release this exquisite perfume
As flattery is the best gift
To give those we know.

Here's to Planting!

    By Diane Hein
    November 7, 2003

Plant a seedling
    Watch it grow
Plant some love
    Watch it spread
Water your flowers
    Watch them blossom
Water your spirit
    Watch it bloom
We're all soulful gardens
    Needing nurture
For a bountiful harvest.

The Man of the Sea

    By Diane Hein
    November 7, 2003

I wonder at the men of the sea
The fishing boats that become their home
To make a living working all day long
And often in the pitch black of night.
Through calm waters
To waves of rage
To icy waters splashing on the deck.
What special gift makes these men
Risk life, limb and family
Who am I to ever complain?

God is There Throughout the Year

    By Diane Hein
    November 7, 2003

God is with you through all of the year
Spring, summer, fall, winter have no fear.

He's the Man to hold you twelve months long
Take your prayers to Him by word or song.

Come Summer when heat is on your head
Gold will give you soft grass on which to bed.

In Spring when dew is on the wet ground
God will take your hand until you're found.

In Autumn when it's so crisp and cool
The Lord provides spiritual fuel.

When Winter comes with frost and cold
God loves you here or in Cotswold.

The Old Oak Tree

    By Diane Hein
    November 7, 2003

Your outstretched limbs and leaves of green
Come protect me now from the wind.
I will seek refuge in your arms
To help me again feel thick-skinned.
Nature has its most humble way
To give her hand to us
When we need a mental lift without a fuss.
So for this hour I'll take some pause
And learn back against your proud bark
Then I will rise up again
And feel strong like famed Joan of Arc.

The Cook and the Hostess

    By Diane Hein
    November 7, 2003

The young man so single and free
Took fancy of a gal whose pretty legs grew on him!
Daily as he gazed upon her
The gleam in his eyes plucked up his nerve.
The cook and the hostess
Could they be a match forever and a day?
Yes they wedded long ago
For this is the story of my mom and dad.

It's Autumn!

    By Diane Hein
    November 7, 2003

A dollop of autumn dropped in today
Heat and humidity finally nudged aside
A smidge of cool air sneaks through my Florida palm
Nature unrolls her new mood
And I welcome her red carpet.

Haiku

Definition of a treat:
Heaven in the mouth
Hell on the hips!
---------------------------------------
Never brush love aside
With each stroke
You'll come alive.

My Mr. Right!

    By Diane Hein
    November 7, 2003

I have no mate but yes it must be
Somewhere he is out there for me!

A man who kisses me each morn
With him I'll feel twice born.

On Friday nights he'll take me out
We'll dine and dance all night no doubt.

Yes somewhere a man is out there
Affectionate, a trait so rare

He'll treat me well in him I'll trust
His love for me will be robust!

Hats off to My Parents!

    By Diane Hein
    November 7, 2003

I had great parents who encouraged me
Sent me to school to be all I could be.

A dad who involved me in many things
A mom who loved me without any strings.

Yes they were a combo of golden days
And to them I bestow my highest praise.

The Power of Two Words

    By Diane Hein
    November 7, 2003

There are two little words we love so much
The precious ones that our hearts they do touch

A short sentence that stands like a tower
"Thank you!" has unbelievable power.

Tricks Up Her Sleeve!

    By Diane Hein
    November 7, 2003

Old age tricked her
She thought she was immune
To stop wrinkling
Lotions and potions
Upon her face she smeared!

But Mother Time ignored them
She has her own inner clock
Steadily pulling at skin and muscle
Creating furrows on a face.

But the old lady had cash stashed
For a rainy day,
So what better use for it now
Than to befriend a scalpel today!

How to Know a Lady of the Night!

    By Diane Hein
    November 17, 2003

She comes from behind the dark lamp post
Silk stockings and garters for her host.

A smile and flutter of eyelashes
A Morse code without dots or dashes!

She wears a short skirt and three inch heels
This helps her make many handsome deals.

Red rosy lips and bright blushing cheeks
Often from heavy perfume she reeks.

A tight bustier shows her cleavage
A hot spot for men that gives her edge!

So saunters a Lady of the Night
A devilish temptress in easy sight!

Breakfast Moms

    By Diane Hein
    November 7, 2003

Here they come with babes in arms
And bassinettes in tow.
Diapers ready for spills
Bottles filled with milk
Rattles for eager hands
Rubber rings for suckling mouths.
Yes Breakfast Moms are here today
Sparkling eyes even after little sleep.
Beaming smiles as they kiss their babies
These mothers have a heavenly glow
Because of God's glorious gifts to them.

    November 7, 2003

Oh I aspire to be a great listener
To hear all you say
Walk in your shoes

Yesterday's Toys

    By Diane Hein
    November 7, 2003

Hoola hoops and slinkies, toys of days gone by
My childhood days so filled with fun my heart would fly!

A Howdy Doody puppet I owned one too
Loved him on TV and at home through and  through.

Oh my priceless treasures, yes they are now sold
Worth gold now but in someone else's billfold!

But their memories I am so I'm thankful for
And that my parents gave me those toys and more!

Against All Odds

    By Diane Hein
    August 8, 2002

Time is brave.
It marches on without thought
Fear or intimidation.
It just grips the moment
Faces challenges
And carries on.

My Song

    By Diane Hein
    August 8, 2002

Heart-shaped songs I sang to you
One heavenly summer.
My music took life on a golden June porch
While I waited for your kiss
Your touch
Your love.

On His Leaving

    By Diane Hein
    August 9, 2002

He left without a kiss
No trace of him on me now.
But I recollect the time we spent together
His warm touch drying me on rainy days
And rainbows surrounding me from his hugs.
I could be sad that love that faded away
But no...
I'm glad for his tenderness until this day.

Late Night Spooks!

    By Diane Hein
    July 29, 2002

I took to deep dreaming late last night
And turned out it caused me great fright.

Images that came from who knows where
They spooked me so, and I felt their dare!

Our minds play such naughty games with us
I need to figure out this ruck-us!

On Dreaming

    By Diane Hein
    August 2, 2002

Nights of toiling in my dreams
Visionary clues buried deep at two a.m.
I'm half awake, half asleep
Deciphering thoughts that drive me mad!
Hours later answers sweep across the black sky
Peace and sleep at last.

Some Day?

    By Diane Hein
    August 2, 2002

I sit afar from my dream
But his eyes never find me.

Someday I wish we would meet
Just a "hello" would be fine.

That time may be months away
For that moment I will pray.

On Smiling

    By Diane Hein
    August 1, 2002

To greet the morning with a smile
This shooting star shines brighter
Than the yellow sun.
Corridors I must face now open wider
And I step lighter
When I don this candle to my lips.

In Spring when dew is on the wet ground
God will take your hand until you're found.

In Autumn when it's so crisp and cool
The Lord provides spiritual fuel.

When Winter comes with frost and cold
God loves you here or in Cotswold.

The Old Oak Tree

    By Diane Hein
    November 7, 2003

Your outstretched limbs and leaves of green
Come protect me now from the wind.
I will seek refuge in your arms
To help me again feel thick-skinned.
Nature has its most humble way
To give her hand to us
When we need a mental lift without a fuss.
So for this hour I'll take some pause
And learn back against your proud bark
Then I will rise up again
And feel strong like famed Joan of Arc.

The Cook and the Hostess

    By Diane Hein
    November 7, 2003

The young man so single and free
Took fancy of a gal whose pretty legs grew on him!
Daily as he gazed upon her
The gleam in his eyes plucked up his nerve.
The cook and the hostess
Could they be a match forever and a day?
Yes they wedded long ago
For this is the story of my mom and dad.

It's Autumn!

    By Diane Hein
    November 7, 2003

A dollop of autumn dropped in today
Heat and humidity finally nudged aside
A smidge of cool air sneaks through my Florida palm
Nature unrolls her new mood
And I welcome her red carpet.

Haiku

Definition of a treat:
Heaven in the mouth
Hell on the hips!

Never brush love aside
With each stroke
You'll come alive.

My Mr. Right!

    By Diane Hein
    November 7, 2003

I have no mate but yes it must be
Somewhere he is out there for me!

A man who kisses me each morn
With him I'll feel twice born.

On Friday nights he'll take me out
We'll dine and dance all night no doubt.

Yes somewhere a man is out there
Affectionate, a trait so rare

He'll treat me well in him I'll trust
His love for me will be robust!

Hats off to My Parents!

    By Diane Hein
    November 7, 2003

I had great parents who encouraged me
Sent me to school to be all I could be.

A dad who involved me in many things
A mom who loved me without any strings.

Yes they were a combo of golden days
And to them I bestow my highest praise.

The Power of Two Words

    By Diane Hein
    November 7, 2003

There are two little words we love so much
The precious ones that our hearts they do touch

A short sentence that stands like a tower
"Thank you!" has unbelievable power.

My Motto!

    By Diane Hein
    November 7, 2003

"This too shall pass" my motto while I'm ill
It makes me feel better than any pill!

It is a five year lesson I have learned
Worth more than any money I have earned.

To go with the flow whether sick or well
It's my little story I love to tell!!

Tricks Up Her Sleeve!

    By Diane Hein
    November 7, 2003

Old age tricked her
She thought she was immune
To stop wrinkling
Lotions and potions
Upon her face she smeared!

But Mother Time ignored them
She has her own inner clock
Steadily pulling at skin and muscle
Creating furrows on a face.

But the old lady had cash stashed
For a rainy day,
So what better use for it now
Than to befriend a scalpel today!

War on the Cheap

    By Diane Hein
    November 7, 2003

War on the cheap
Was our War on Iraq
Saving money then
Losing American lives now.
Who's the greater fool
Rumsfeld who ordered the troops
Or Bush who approved it.

How to Know a Lady of the Night!

    By Diane Hein
    November 17, 2003

She comes from behind the dark lamp post
Silk stockings and garters for her host.

A smile and flutter of eyelashes
A Morse code without dots or dashes!

She wears a short skirt and three inch heels
This helps her make many handsome deals.

Red rosy lips and bright blushing cheeks
Often from heavy perfume she reeks.

A tight bustier shows her cleavage
A hot spot for men that gives her edge!

So saunters a Lady of the Night
A devilish temptress in easy sight!

Breakfast Moms

    By Diane Hein
    November 7, 2003

Here they come with babes in arms
And bassinettes in tow.
Diapers ready for spills
Bottles filled with milk
Rattles for eager hands
Rubber rings for suckling mouths.
Yes Breakfast Moms are here today
Sparkling eyes even after little sleep.
Beaming smiles as they kiss their babies
These mothers have a heavenly glow
Because of God's glorious gifts to them.

One Aspiration!

    By Diane Hein
    November 7, 2003

Oh I aspire to be a great listener
To hear all you say
Walk in your shoes
And understand your way.

To pay attention while you speak
And concentrate on your words
Then absorb their mystique
That is my wish today.

From motivational/writer Stephen Covey, "One of the goals of parents is NOT to motivate them, but to teach them how to motivate themselves."

Note below:  I use "he" but of course this encompasses "she" !!

The Optimist

    By Diane Hein
    October 24, 2003

The Optimist sees the good
    But knows there is bad.
Believes in life
    Knowing there is death.

The Optimist plans on success
    Knowing there is failure.
Makes lemonade
    Knowing there are lemons.

The Optimist sees the goal
    Knowing there are traps.
Persists in his work
    Knowing he'll get tired.

Above all The Optimist believes in himself.

Hold On!

    By Diane Hein
    October 24, 2003

When happiness comes your way
Grab it tightly for the day!

Treasure it like precious gold
Let its joy take a strong hold.

Mold it into small trinkets
Stuff into all your pockets.

Then when tomorrow arrives
Pull from your mental archives!

Queen of the House

    By Diane Hein
    October 24, 2003

She was the Queen of the House
Wash on Monday
Iron on Tuesday
Dust on Wednesday
Vacuum on Thursday
Clean up on Friday
Groceries on Saturday
Church on Sunday.

And in between all of this
Working part-time
Tending to her children
Cooking for her husband and family.
She ruled with a loving hand.
How do I know all this?
Because...
This great lady was my mom.

Your Gift

    By Diane Hein
    October 24, 2003

What is the gift you bear
That a king would gladly buy
The gift that would make him
Wiser
Stronger
Steadfast
One that you own
Yet never bought
Perhaps you don't see it
But dig deep because it's there
Waiting to be nurtured.

The Chapters of Our Life

    By Diane Hein
    October 24, 2003

Life has its chapters
It's been so often said
A storybook we write
Sometimes on purpose
Sometimes inadvertently.
The forward movement of the pages
Yet we know not when The End.
Sometimes a mystery novel we pen
When outcomes are not known.
Other times in grief and death
It's weeks of difficult nonfiction.
So best we keep our writing skills up
Because the legacy we leave on earth
Is how we write each day.

The Day Runs By

    By Diane Hein
    October 24, 2003

The day runs by
Like a little stream with endless flow
Or a fog that moves on in
Nothing stops the day.
Duty calls for its movement
Forward it goes
A lesson for us all.

Your One Window

    by Diane Hein
    October 24, 2003

If your day runs dry
And the path circles shut
Keep a window open
The one that lets the sun in
The one tucked in your heart
For through it will shine a corridor of hope
That whatever befalls in your life
You can handle
That whatever happens
You can carry on.

To All Dog Lovers

    By Diane Hein
    October 24, 2003

Shaggy or short-haired
Pug nose or long snout
Five pounds or fifty
Dogs are filled with love.

From wet noses
To wistful eyes
To wagging tails
Dogs are filled with love.

With their undying devotion
And happy woofs
And games of tag and fetch
Dogs fill their owners with love.

To All House Cat Lovers

    By Diane Hein
    October 24, 2003

Meows and purrs
the golden voice of The Cat
Aloofness and affection
    the personality of The Cat.
Tamed and wild
    the nature of The Cat.

In Egyptian times
    cats were worshipped.
In modern times
    cats are loved.
The power of The Cat lives on!

We Can Change the World

    By Diane Hein
    October 24, 2003

We can change the world
Not by our vote
But by our love
Kind words delivered
To our friends and to the world
Affection
Admiration
Adoration
Just for starts.

The Poet's Battle

    By Diane Hein
    October 24, 2003

I search for a word in my white matter
Through the maze and all the noise and clatter! ;-)

In my wide synapses and brain burroughs
I charge fearlessly through their undertows!

It is like fishing for a golden prize
Hoping I'd reel in a brilliant surprise!

Some days I compose a great line or phrase
Other times my mind's in a dungeon's daze!

But whether my poems get published or not
My battle for words is always well fought!

Let Your Brushes Flow

    By Diane Hein
    October 24, 2003

The crayons we once loved
Are now swept away
But we're all children at heart
That playful side we still have.
Because we're all artists
No matter the age.
So let your brushes flow
And paint laughter in your sky
With humor in the ground.
Then the masterpiece you create
Will reflect joy when you're looked upon.

My Clown and Flower Garden

    By Diane Hein
    October 24, 2003

My little clown garden is a gift to me
Colorful blooming bows are a must to see!

My living present smiles at me every morn
With ribbons of blossoms, I feel so reborn!

What better gift could I ever give myself
Than pretty home-grown flowers placed on my shelf.

I Once Knew....

     By Diane Hein
      October 23, 2003

I once knew a man with a fine degree
With many and varied interests had he.

Oft his wit would tickle my funny bone
I'd chuckle right into a laughing zone.

Fondness for him I readily admit
A romantic attachment for this Brit.

He liked my emails and he told me so
But less and less he wrote, such a big blow.

So the journey with him is over now.
Broken is the trust in our friendship bow.

I hope this poem gives you a few laughs!  Diane

My Way to a Man's Heart!

    By Diane Hein
    October 3, 2003

A gourmet cook I'll never claim to be
Pots should only be used for making tea!

Beef roasts I would over or under cook
Then Alka Seltzer my dates made and took!

Spices I have used too much or too few
Either one makes a boyfriend very blue!

Desserts I only made for eye appeal
As cake decorating has so much zeal!

Though it's easy to use the microwave
Shoe leather is not what men seek or crave!

So my cooking will not win a man's heart
As my dinners would tear his gut apart!

Instead I'll find a man who loves my smile
For that I pray he'll walk me down the aisle!

The OTHER Way to a Man's Heart!

    By Diane Hein
    October 4, 2003

Yes I have been raised by a very old wife's tale
That still persists today like a powerful gale.

That "The way to a man's heart is through his stomach"
Whether he does surgery or he drives a Mack truck!

But modern times are here and we all know what's true
And I must confess I have also witnessed this too.

That the old times and old ways have changed by and by
"The way to a man's heart is really through his fly!"

Here's To Mud in My Eye!

    By Diane Hein
    October 10, 2003

In nature there are some beautiful creatures
Who have all the normal animal features.

But when it comes to their taking cleansing baths
In water, you'll never find their dirty calves.

Instead they roll around in thick, goopy mud
Never realizing it's full of germs and crud.

And me being of the posh human species
I take watery showers and hot baths with ease.

But when my garden hose splashed dirt in my eye
Perhaps these mud bath dances can keep me spry!

Climbing Roses

    By Diane Hein
    September 25, 2003

In my yard among the climbing red roses I once sat
In summer's eve, my mother and I would relax and chat.

She calmed and eased many of my childhood fears and tears
Oh how I cherished and loved her those wonderful years.

And now Stacy and my niece Cherie have a little daughter too
And by those transplanted roses they too will rendezvous.

Can A Man be Trained?

    By Diane Hein
    September 25, 2003

Can a man be trained?
Women often ask.
For men to put the toilet seat down
Without a smirk or frown!
To completely cap the toothpaste
When they're off to work in haste.
Oh centuries have now gone by
And still women will try!

It's Always Something!

    By Diane Hein
    September 25, 2003

It's always something to set off the day
Little quirks that splash up our way.
Causing spills to our perfect cup
Keys that are lost
Terse store clerks
Flat tires at 7 a.m. on the way to work!
Oh the tiny buzzes
That riot our brains
These mundane events
That add drama to the day!

My Little Clown Garden

    By Diane Hein
    September 25, 2003

I have a little garden by my door
Tending to it is hardly a chore.

But instead wonderment from it I derive
Watching it grow makes me feel so alive.

The rich, dark potting soil I love to feel
While I plant delightful flowers and kneel.

Even the fresh, pungent mulch smells so good
The fragrance beings me back to my childhood.

Yes my new hobby brings me much pleasure
To make a happy heart, it's a great lure!

To all My Friends and Penpals

    By Diane Hein
    September 25, 2003

My wonderful foliage of friends
Whether penpals or face to face
You all create such a forest of joy
With your limbs outstretched
to catch me when I fall
Or your emails and smiles to bring cheer.
I thank each and everyone of you
For always being there :)

Comment:  Is poetry the extension of the one liner or is the one liner a short poem?

Haiku  17 syllables or less in 3 to 4 lines

Sex and stars
Their common bond
Of brightening the night!
-----------------------------------------------
Dark might be our past
But every dawn
Carries new light.

Romance yourself
For self love
Is a great joy.

Life is a ride
Through tunnels and hills
Gas up for the distance!

Carry On!

    By Diane Hein
    September 25, 2003

Stand strong, stand tall
Learn not to fall.

With each big wave
Brace and be brave.

Be of stout stock
A solid rock.

You are robust
In yourself trust!

The Braid of Life

    By Diane Hein
    September 25, 2003

Life can be a bit of a braid
So many interweaving into one long tail.
We carry it through the years
Often dragging it along
Othertimes it's an adornment
Where we add pretty ribbons
And decorate each day.

Remembering Flora

    By Diane Hein
    September 25, 2003

What stories shall I tell today
Should they all be bright and gay?
And about what good has come my way?

Or should I tell you
About the widow, Flora, I once knew
Who spent beyond her means
And in her shell she withdrew?

I believe both stories must be told
So we'll offer acts of kindness
Which are pure gold.

Her Bike Ride

    By Diane Hein
    September 25, 2003

She takes to her bike everyday
To peddle all her cares away.

Passing by greenery and trees
She loves the flowers with their bees.

Riding up and down many hills
Gives her new sights often thrills

Her overloaded mind soon clears
As she's filled with wonderful cheers.

Oh let's all ride our bike today
We will smile more and be gay!

The Romantic Gardener

    By Diane Hein
    September 25, 2003

He's a romantic gardener
Tending to his mate
Brings her flowers for no reason
In any season.
He knows tenderness is sun for her soul
And kindness waters her heart.
Yes he's a romantic gardener
And she's the beautiful flower
He'll get to pick and keep.

Remembrance   (based on a poem by Robert Southey)

    By Diane Hein
    September 25, 2003

The days that are no more
Yet memories still pour

Warm smiles they once exchanged
But now they're so estranged.

Laughter was their common goal
Bonding them to one soul.

Nights of passion o'er now
Broken is their love's vow.

Time will pass and they'll heal.
Then dating will appeal.

Our Dreams

    By Diane Hein
    September 25, 2003

What hidden meanings do you hide
What must my mind sort out
Your images once so bright
Now play hide 'n seek in day's clouds
The mystery of our lives
Unlocked in our nightly dreams
These wonderful short stories
Makes unpublished authors of us all!

The Magic of Our Dreams

    By Diane Hein
    September 25, 2003

Oh fond dream
You sneak away
At first so crisp
So real
Then like a tide you're swept out to sea.
You're but a memory now
Leaving few clues in your wake.
So I'm left to decipher them
To dig deep and understand
And figure them all out
Before the sun sets tonight.

Saying Good-Bye

    By Diane Hein
    September 25, 2003

Yes we have drifted apart
Not my choice but yours
Friends we once were
Strangers now it seems
Once we chatted endlessly
Today hardly at all.
Silence to me is not golden.
I don't like this dark.
But for the reasons you're gone
They'll always be in in your heart
So rather than delve too deep
It's time for us to part.

Bless The Little Ones

    By Diane Hein
    September 25, 2003

Fearless they are
Hands everywhere
Giggles and smiles too
Exploring the world unafraid
Curiosity everywhere!
Oh little ones
Please, Please
Teach us a lesson
One we forgot long ago
To reach out with passion
And determination
And go after what we want!

To Learn a New Song

    By Diane Hein
    September 25, 2003

Our minds can be heaven or hell
Making life a joy
Or one we want to escape.
The time we spend in anger or grief
Those days are not a song
Best to learn new tunes
To brighten our lives
Of acceptance
And learning to forgive
A life that is easier to live.

What's In a Man's Heart?

    By Diane Hein
    September 25, 2003

What's in a man's heart
Has no bounds.
A spirit so strong
Dreams to be found.
A drive to succeed
His woman to please
To protect his family
All that and more
In the heart of a man.

Designing a Good Life

    By Diane Hein
    September 25, 2003

Life can be a designer gown or a fitted suit
Yew the costs can be high
But a tailored living is well worth the price.
Hours we have to toil
Cutting the pattern exactly
Sewing all the edges evenly
Correcting our mistakes
And dealing with the mistakes of others.
Scissors need to be resharpened
A strong thread for repairs
Zippers need renewal.
But years later
We still can wear our Sunday best
For what is well made
Stands the test of time.

Who's the Tiger?

    By Diane Hein
    September 25, 2003

The tiger walks
The tiger stalks
Even at Disney's Animal Kingdom
The tiger rules.
It's his domain
And as I watch him
Standing so fierce and tall
I'm still humbled by him
And yet I can feel my own power.

We Become A Precious Jewel

    By Diane Hein
    September 25, 2003

We become a precious jewel
The older we become
The rock that had so many crevices
Now becomes a polished stone.
The spins and turns of the years
The challenges we rolled through
The people who tumbled our lives
Leaves us stronger
Harder
Brighter
Than any diamond mined.

Expectations

    By Diane Hein
    September 25, 2003

Pitter patter
Little footsteps
We jog through our day
Sometimes fast
Sometimes slow
Sometimes heavy footed
Sometimes light on our toe.
What do we want
From our day?
Let's expect good things to happen
The key to positive thinking
And a happier day!

And The Winner Is...

    By Diane Hein
    September 25, 2003

We ran the race
Each trying to win
But we spun out of control
Until the game was over.
And then what we lost
Was the heart of each other.

The Best Present to Yourself

    By Diane Hein
    September 25, 2003

Give to yourself
A little present
Time the time to love yourself
And at the end of each day
Be most proud of who you are
And forgive your mistake.
Build yourself up
Show some kindness to yourself
God gave you many good gifts
So celebrate who you are!

Oh Your Sweet Kiss

    By Diane Hein
    September 25, 2003

Oh the sweetest most charming kiss last night
Tender, soft and unexpected
From the mist you came into my sight
Tiptoeing silently right by my bed.

Love's arrow carried in by evening wing
While stars sparkled in heaven's air
Your earthly presence such a wondrous ring
With arms encircling me showing your care.
Poetry we both wrote in the deep dark
Bodies entwined into a melody
Magic created by our lovers spark
All in my dream last night!

My Little Book of Favorite Poems from 1913

    By Diane Hein
    September 25, 2003

Little book I have used you so well
Like a close friend you make my heart swell

A Victorian gal on the front
Dressed for tea or a manhunt!

Sacred poems are between your pages
Passed down through the many ages.

I've come to rely on your often
To inspire and move my morning pen.

Yes your cover is now worn and old
But within you are stories of pure gold.

Do You Know One?

    By Diane Hein
    September 25, 2003

Kinder, gentler spirits
We all want to know them.
The ones who love us so unconditionally
Yes the beautiful souls who listen to our hearts
Then they smile bright and keep
Encouraging us on.
Very few judgments do they ever make on us
Oh how precious, dear and few
There rare people are!

The Flavor Of Hope

    By Diane Hein
    September 25, 2003

Hope tastes good
Sweet like candy
Smooth like pudding
And in that sweetness
There's the spice of joy.
Yes hope tastes good
A certain meatiness
To sink one's teeth in and enjoy
And like salt it flavors the day.
Yet hope is calorie free
And you can savor it all day long
So your spirit is always filled.

Making Rainbows

    By Diane Hein
    September 25, 2003

Happiness is like a rainbow
Shining brightly down
When it will arrive at our doorstep
No one knows.
Often after clouds of rain
The colors will dazzle the sky
Lifting spirits for the hour
Showing us God's power.
But rainbows, we can make our own
A smile
A hug
A laugh
A gift
A thank you
So one of these will color the day
To bring rainbows of happiness
To those we know.

My Favorite Place!

    By Diane Hein
    September 25, 2003

Travels I have gone afar
Earth has many a bright star.

I've seen the Eiffel Tower
Both its presence and power.

I have admired Big Ben
Would love to see him again!

Beauty in the Vatican
Michelangelo what a man!

The Scottish Highlands were grand
Castles too on the mainland.

Belgium with its charm and lace
And Bruges such a quaint place.

The huge Alps in Switzerland
Power formed by God's hand.

Mexico lively and gay
My cousin lives there today.

Germany and Austria
Filled me with much ohm pah pah!

Norway, Sweden love them too
Would go again and review!

Disney World was so much fun
Even in August's hot sun!

But for me there is one place
That is really the true ace.

That's the wondrous Grand Canyon
My heart always there is drawn.

My Daily Destiny

    By Diane Hein
    January 18, 2003

My days are very full and my heart is bright
Always keeping the important in sight.

While this earth is not my eternity
Still it's my job to love that is the key.

To keep hope open like a fresh flower
That's my wondrous creation for this hour.

I'll trust myself in the things I do
Handling challenges in any venue.

The Stars of the Grand Canyon

    By Diane Hein
    January 16, 2003

The impulse of the stars sets me on fire
It takes me far above all daily mire.

Their sparkle, their glow, their joy, their twinkling
Single fireworks to the skies they bring.

Magic whirls brightly way beyond midnight
It's all the grandeur of God's divine light.

His Visionary Feast!

    By Diane Hein
    January 16, 2003

She caught his eye
Flowing in grace she danced by.
His passions swirling like a dust storm
Was he doomed to her charms?
The arithmetic of lust
Keeps adding up
Multiplying
Quadrupling
Impervious to all reason!

To Elena, my little grand niece

    By Great Aunt Diane
    January 19, 2003

Little Elena with your baby eyes
You're lighting up the Carolina skies.

Two caring parents will give you much love
So your wee heart will take wing like a dove.

The college of the future waits for you
To study, learn and interpret anew.

Just roll, turn and flow with the wheel of life
And you will learn to handle your strife.

So baby Elena while you sleep
Your Great Aunt Diane loves you so deep.

The Four Seasons

    By Diane Hein
    November 15, 2002

Balding boughs a sign of winter
Leaves excised by the wind.
Fall no longer immortal
Spring and summer far removed.
Mother Nature is on the move!
Her four link weather chain
Completes its yearly cycle
With never ending passion!

After His Divorce

    By Diane Hein
    November 15, 2002

He left.
Into the abyss of life.
A man on the move
With no warning at all.
Joy has run out
And so he must run too.
Seeking seclusion at first
A hole that will hold him
Swallow him
Protect him from himself
Until his emotional baldness
Buries itself
So he can reclaim his life
And start over.

In Honor of Their Love

    By Diane Hein
    December 21, 2002

Kisses cultivating bushes of roses
Hugs growing sun-filled daisies
Love raising years of fruit-filled fields.
Theirs is a love forever
Fifty years a celebration
A romantic partnership.
Love at first sight
A garden can be planted with just one glance.

Elderly Concerns

    By Diane Hein
    November 18, 2002

It's Senior Citizen Monday
Four men, two women,
A round table discussion
Over their McDonald's coffee
Discussing not Iraq
Or 9/11.
But of Vitamin E and Prilosec
Longevity and well being
Override worldly concerns.

The Healing

    By Diane Hein
    November 18, 2003

The trees are almighty
The snow-capped mountains dazzling
Starry solitude in wandering wind
Nature's song brings me joy
Climbing clouds bring me peace
These gifts of life heal my soul.

The Poet in Me

    By Diane Hein
    November 18, 2002

A clear-blue sky
The sun brightly shining
An elderly lady with a rain bonnet!
Is she crazy
Or just covering
A well-coiffed hair do?
I invade people's lives
And not one word do I speak
I just observe
And write, and write and write.

The Changing World

    By Diane Hein
    November 22, 2002

The world has changed
Love seems less and less
Thankfulness appears a lost art
Religion often an afterthought
But if we stick to our ideals
The earth will keep spinning
And good will overcome evil.

The Anti-Aging Secret

    By Diane Hein
    November 20, 2002

A youthful heart is merry
A middle-aged heart is never idle
An aging heart which loves
Stays forever young.

Our Rule Books

    By Diane Hein
    November 22, 2002

Life is under no expectation
To give us what we want
Or take us where we want to go.
Our private rule books
Typed up in perfect black.
Fools we are to live by them
Smart we are to expect the unexpected
And learn to survive.

Friendship Gardens

    By Diane Hein
    January 9, 2002

You’re a complex person
Like peeling an onion
Layers upon layers revealed.
Paths you’ve taken
And roads you want to cross.
An inspiration you are
Creating a beautiful meadow
In the landscape of my life. :)

The Gourmet Life

    By Diane Hein
    January 9, 2003

Each hour has a flavor
A meal in itself.
Will it be spicy or sweet
And shall we savor its tang?
The art of gourmet living
Bite by bite
We must learn to value each course!

Youthful Preservation!

    By Diane Hein

    November 8, 2002

I want to keep my child-like innocence
Its trust
Its faith
Its hope
These are most precious jewels
Found in no earthly cave.
I’ll seek them everyday
From the depths of my soul
And mine them so carefully.
It may take some dynamite
And many a trusted shovel,
With long days and nights ahead,
But their excavation is my goal!

Life Has Its Order!!!

    By Diane Hein

    November 9, 2002

We have our favorite seats
The ones we love the most.
Hers on the side
Mine in the corner.
Across the distance
We nod hello and smile.
Then our croissants
Become our focus
And down to business we go!!!

The poem below was based on a Native American saying I read

To My Niece and Nephew :)

    By Diane Hein

    November 12, 2003

Yes I will be gone some day
As time shall steal me away
But I’ll leave a special gift to you
The best present I could give.
It won’t be wrapped in ribbon
Or have a big red bow.
But I’ll bequeath my love to you
And you shall always feel its glow.

I Need a Camera!

    By Diane Hein
    August, 1998

A telescopic camera
Is what I need
To carry with me
Throughout the day
And even the night.
So with just one touch
Of a little knob
No matter where I am
Or what happens to me
I can zoom in
And still focus
On the POSITIVE!

Going with the Flow

        By Diane Hein
        August 10, 2002

Grief comes in waves like the rolling blue sea
A morning tide that washes over me.

But as the water recedes and flows back
I steady myself for the next attack.

I'll learn to flow with life's big and small blows
To stay on top avoiding undertows.

New Beginnings

        By Diane Hein
        August 18, 2002

It's time to move on.
Yesterday's hallways I shall leave.
I hear their music
But new rhythms bounce in me
And they pull me forward.
My eyes have dried
And the rains have helped me bloom
I'm growing in a new garden of dreams.

Seeking Refuge

        By Diane Hein
        August 16, 2002

I need to go
I'm dissembled.
Torn in pieces
Much time in chains.

I'll seek refuge
In evening skies
